An Afternoon with Luciana Serra and Pol Avinyó at the Tenor Viñas Competition

As part of the 63rd edition of the Tenor Viñas International Singing Competition, the Gran Teatre del Liceu hosted the activity “Una tarda amb…”, a public event held on Saturday the 17th at 6:30 p.m. in the Liceu Foyer. The session, led by the Liceu’s Deputy Artistic Director Pol Avinyó, offered an intimate and relaxed conversation with Italian soprano Luciana Serra, who shared experiences and reflections on her career.

This initiative reflects the Competition’s commitment to adding value to its programme each year by expanding the experience beyond the contest itself and creating a meeting point between professionals and the general public. “An Afternoon with…” thus emerges as a space to listen, ask questions, and talk about opera in an open and accessible format.

During the event, Serra recalled her appearances at the Liceu, especially in seasons such as 1977–1978 and 1993, highlighting the strong impression the theatre made on her. Some recordings of the artist’s most emblematic arias were also shown, prompting applause from the audience. Pol Avinyó emphasised the role of the Queen of the Night, and Luciana Serra expressed her interest in having the first aria played, which is much more difficult than the second, even though the latter is the more famous one. She noted that while one aria is based mainly on grace, the other is dominated by strength, the soprano explained.

With initiatives like this, the Tenor Viñas Competition broadens its programme beyond the competition itself, creating spaces for outreach and closeness that allow audiences to experience opera through conversation.
